In the Easy Chair with Kayla Kennedy

AGE: 17

OCCUPATION:  Zoë & Co.  professional bra fitters’ newest Zoë Girl.

RESIDENCE:  Westerly.

BORN, RAISED & GREW UP IN: Westerly through and through.

RIGHT NOW I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF: Completing my senior year.

I ENJOY SPENDING MY TIME: Either hanging out in the music room at the high school with all of the other band kids or by sitting at Savoy. Both bring me comfort.

MY PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: My Senior Project for sure. Putting on my Gender Bender Fashion Show took months of planning and prep. Every detail of the night had to be planned out so things would run smoothly. It was madness at times and I could’ve stopped at any point and picked a simpler project but I didn’t. I was fueled by my passion and the result was truly beautiful.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR: Questioning. My whole life I’ve questioned things that didn’t sit right with me or things that didn’t make sense and I think it’s become an important personality trait of mine. I’m not a person who likes to follow blindly and that’s something I take pride in.

TOP ON MY BUCKET LIST: Experience as much as Africa as possible. The different people, the cultures, the wildlife, all of it.

ALWAYS IN MY POCKET: My phone, keys, and inhaler.

WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP: There was an aspiration to be a comedic actress for awhile. I always found comfort and validation in making others laugh. This is still true but I think I’ve shifted my sights more towards helping others, so I plan to go to school for social work.

PERSON WHO HAS INFLUENCED ME THE MOST: Anne Barnhart, without a doubt.

BOOKS ON MY NIGHT STAND: “Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli, and “Mozart in the Jungle: Sex Drugs and Classical Music” by Blair Tindall.

I AM LISTENING TO: “This Is Me,” by Keala Settle.

FAVORITE TV SHOW: “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

FAVORITE SONG: “Lola,” by The Kinks

FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD: Stuffed crust pizza.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES I USE MOSTLY: Twitter. I find that it has the best balance of both news and satire.

TRAIT I MOST ADMIRE: Open-mindedness.

PET PEEVE: As a new driver I’ve started to notice the general lack of blinkers. That can really grind my gears.

FAVORITE QUOTATION: “Nevertheless, she persisted.” — Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD: Those summer nights when me and my friends are all crammed into a car at the overlook, watching the sunset. There’s loud music and laughter and I can see the hues of the sky reflected onto everybody’s faces. I really don’t think I’ve ever seen something so effortlessly beautiful. That’s something I’ll never forget about living here.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME: Despite my hair color, I really don’t like the color pink.

BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED: You’ll never be able to make everybody happy so don’t always feel like you have to try to.

ADVICE I BEST LIKE TO GIVE: Always remember the importance in listening, understanding and acceptance.

IF I RULED THE WORLD I WOULD: I would turn it over to Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

IF I WON THE LOTTERY, THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS: Make sure my parents didn’t have to worry about their bills ever again, and then probably invest in some startup businesses.

I DRIVE A: 2005 gray Ford Focus

I WISH I DROVE A:  1963 Volkswagen Bus

ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE: Hot sauce and cheese.

IF I COULD INVITE ONE SPECIAL PERSON TO JOIN ME FOR DINNER AND CONVERSATION, I WOULD INVITE: Frida Kahlo. Frida did what she wanted and didn’t let anything get in her way. She was beautiful, inspirational and an amazing artist.
