It may be a challenge but when it involves food, family and fun — and when that food is pizza, you can bet it will be a lighthearted and loving event. And that’s exactly what it was at the annual Fusellitaro Pizza Challenge. One a recent Sunday afternoon, more than a dozen youngsters gathered at the beautiful home of Elaine (Poiomani) Eisenhaure to swim in the pool and ferry pizzas from Elaine’s niece and nephew’s house across the street — where the contestants (who all happen to be cousins) Christopher, Brent Fusaro and Amanda Sammataro-Barelli were busy rolling dough and creating masterpiece pizza pies — to the judges who sat poolside waiting to declare the winner. Judges Victor Perreira, Joe Luzzi and Gary Kaizer sampled deep-dish Detroit style, steak and cheese and a sweet potato-arugula specialty pizza for texture, flavor and visual appeal. In the end, Sammataro-Barelli was declared the winner. Always gracious, the top pizza chef said the annual event is totally non-competitive and more about the experience. “We all help each other out,” she said.
