Centennial celebration for Florence

Westerly’s Florence (Saunders) Madison, who taught at Ashaway School and Babcock Junior High, celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family on Aug. 31. A small gathering of folks who visit Florence regularly — along with her 90-year-old former pastor who traveled from St. Paul, Minn., accompanied by his daughter, who traveled from New Orleans — including former students (from the years between 1943 and 1973) spoke glowingly of her skills as their math teacher — as did both adult learners and parents of her students. Florence’s daughter, Ellen, made three carrot cakes, which her other daughter, Sarah, fashioned to create the number “100” for the party. One of the guests was trumpeter Mike Parkinson, who brought down the house when he started off the party playing “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow.” Florence, who is also the mother of Robert, and the grandmother of Zachary Smith, blew out the candles with George Gee, who shares the same birthday.
