The Westerly Sun

Greetings from the Front Porch dear friends and kind readers, and welcome back to the Front Porch where we’re suddenly in full September swing and in the mums — pumpkins — back to school mode. And Teddy Bear mode too! Let’s send a singing Teddy Bear off to the home of  Natalia and Brian Rosso for their baby girl, Uma Sterling Rosso who was born Aug. 27, at 5:25 p.m., at South County Hospital weighing in at 9 pounds, 3 ounces and measuring 21.5 inches in length. Beautiful Uma is the granddaughter of Jamie and Michael Rosso, Patricia Rosso, and Laurie and Jeffrey Mortrude. Uma’s mama is a super-talented vocalist who sings with the super-popular band, Sugar.

Let’s also welcome sweet Camille Waters McKendree, who was born a few days earlier on Aug. 25, to Annie Aschim McKendree and Read McKendree. New grandparents are Kathy and Bill McKendree of Westerly, and Martha and Kurt Aschim of Marinette, Wis. Perhaps a Teddy Bear equipped with a surfboard be apropos?

And let’s send another Teddy Bear off to the home of John Bellone and Melissa Paige for their newborn baby girl, Maria Inge Bellone, who arrived on Aug. 20 at 5:15 p.m. Baby Maria was named for her grandmother, the late Maria D. Bellone, who, along with her husband, Nicola Bellone, and their family (Catena, Peter and John) are a co-owner of Breezeway Resort and Maria's Seaside Cafe. What a big year for the Bellone family, with the opening of the Hotel Maria and the reopening of Maria’s Seaside Café (which stays open through Sept. 16 this year). Lots of happy news for a deserving family. Warm congratulations and welcome baby Maria!

Felicitations to our longtime friend and former neighbor Sebastian Kandell (WHS grad and former Town Beach and Ocean House lifeguard) and Isabel Burnham, who were married over the Labor Day weekend on Fishers Island in the same place and on the same weekend Isabel’s parents were married 32 years ago. Isabel’s sisters, Olivia and Sophia, and Sebastian’s sisters Allie and Marlena (who are also WHS grads) were there for the celebration, and my friend and neighbor Lori Mattessino-Pienadz attending with her husband Bobby, and her son, Daniel (who was in the wedding), had the honor of escorting the groom down the grassy island aisle (and looked fabulous as always). Isabel’s mom, Rachel Balaban, is co-founder and co-director of Artists and Scientists as Partners at Brown where she “advocates for arts in health care and facilitates studies of the theory and engagement with the practice of the arts in healing.” Her dad, John Burnham, was editor at Sailing World and Cruising World magazines, and is an avid sailor. Isabel’s grandparents, David and Ann Burnham, helped found the Paul Cuffee Charter School.

What an interesting time last week when investigative reporter (and Pulitzer Prize-winner)  C. J. Chivers visited — along with his charming wife, Susan Keating — was in town to talk about his new book. Dozens of people turned out, including former Sun reporters Rita Manfredi and Andrea Panciera (whose aunt Florence Marie Rosso just celebrated a big birthday!), Judy and Bob Serra, Susan Capalbo and Westerly Hospital volunteer Carol Ruffo, whose son, David Rohde, is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter. Happy New Year to our friends celebrating Rosh Hashana and ciao bella!
