The American Red Cross said it has has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all blood types. Donors are asked to make an appointment and help address the winter blood donation shortage. Severe winter weather has forced 150 blood drives to cancel across the U.S., and the Red Cross said it was down 28,000 donations in November-December. Anyone who gives blood or platelets this month will receive a $5 Dunkin' Donuts gift card.
Local blood drives include: Tuesday, Jan. 23 at VFW Post 3263, 60 Stonington Road, Mystic, from 12:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and on Jan. 30 at the Stonington Police station, 173 South Broad St., Pawcatuck, from 1 to 6 p.m., and at Kenyon Industries, 36 Sherman Ave, Shannock, from 8 a.m. to noon.
