Westerly Senior Center: Trips and activities information

A representative from the Department of Veterans Affairs is available at the senior center every two months to answer questions about programs, services, and the Veterans Cemetery, home, and medical center. The representative can help with filling out and filing paperwork. The next scheduled meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 9:30 a.m.

On alternate months, Project Outreach of Westerly, which is sponsored by the VFW and DAV, offer assistance to veterans and their dependents. A representative will be available to help with VA disability claims, health benefits, and claims. Please take advantage of these services so that Veterans and VFW Outreach will continue offering their services.

The Red Hat Chicks will meet at the Senior Center on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Please bring a valentine. For questions, call the new queen mum, Nancy Milligan.

Center members are reminded that dues ran out on Dec. 31 and are now late for 2018. If you have paid them already, thank you. If you take part in activities, you are expected to be a member of the center. Newsletters are mailed to members, so if you have not paid your dues yet, you will not receive March’s newsletter.

If you plan to run in the May board of directors election, dues must have been paid by Jan.15. Dues are still $25 this year and may be paid at the center office or mailed to the center at 39 State St., Westerly RI 02891.

Details on trips

Because  we share buses with other groups, if  you see a trip or tour you would like to go on, it is a good idea to put down a deposit to secure a place. Do not wait if you need to cancel, as there may be people waiting for a spot. In other cases, if we have guaranteed the number of travelers, the Senior Center will be required to pay the cost of the seat.

For most trips, the balance is due one month before the trip. Do not hesitate to add your name to a wait list for trips that are full. Cancellations do happen. We do not place names on lists without a deposit.

South Kingstown Parks & Rec trips will leave from our Senior Center if there are more than two or three people. Conway day trips going north will often have three or four scheduled stops, depending on the direction of the trip. Trips going south will not have any additional stops. For Gourmet Travelers-sponsored trips, the pickup spot is usually the parking lot at Exit 1 of I-95 in Ashaway.

As a reminder, AARP is assisting with filing tax returns this year. Aides will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please be sure to bring your Social Security card, a photo ID such as a license, all your forms of income and materials if you plan to itemize.
