Meet Thomas Griffen and his medical alert service dog, Sterling, Wednesday at a free program sponsored by the Westerly College Club. The talk will be held at 1 p.m. at the St. Clare Church Parish Center, 4 St. Clare Way, Westerly. Griffen, who has a number of health issues, including multiple sclerosis, diabetes and a cardiac condition, says that Sterling has given him a sense of independence. Hear tales of inspiration Thursday at 6 p.m. at Savoy Bookshop and Café on Canal Street in Westerly when author Colleen Kelly Alexander shares the incredible story of how she survived a diagnosis of lupus, brain surgery, five weeks in a coma and 29 surgeries in an author discussion about her book, titled “Gratitude in Motion.”
