Letter: A big ‘thank you’ for all the volunteer help provided to the American Flag Fund committee

Thank You — two words with so much meaning that comes from the heart.

These words are in appreciation for all who have helped me and my committee members of the American Flag Fund set up and take down all the flags that have been displayed along the streets of our town during the holidays from May through November.

Committee members Mike Bankert, Tom Nall, George Wildes, John Humble, Mike Miller, Ed Liguouri and family, and the Boy Scout Troop #16, led by Felix Martinez and councilors have always been at the forefront to accomplish this good deed of patriotism.

Also all the folks who have volunteered to help us out. Without the volunteers, we would not have been able to set up so many flags in such a short period of time.

We’re also thankful for any donations that have been contributed by folks like yourself, or business organizations like WBLQ, The Westerly Sun, our veterans organizations and many more. Without your support it would very difficult to keep this program alive and well.

Thanks to the towns of Westerly and Stonington for their support in ‘keeping old glory flying’ along our sidewalks.

Thanks to Pete Chiaradio, Wayne Palumbo, Charles Sposato and their team down at the Westerly Public Works Department for providing all the drilled holes along the streets of town and to Westerly Town Manager Derrik Kennedy for his support along with the Westerly Town Council members.

In all, it has been a good season flying all 275 plus flags, showing our support for our country, its citizens, our veterans, young and old, our town and our neighbors. Now is the time to store them away for the winter months ahead and to make repairs.

Since 2009, the American flags have been flying throughout the two towns; in Pawcatuck, by the dedicated work of Mr. William Stewart, his wife and fire department members, and in Westerly by the American Flag Fund Committee. Thank you Westerly Armory president, Roberta Mudge Humble and its board of directors.

Hope all had a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving and we, the members of the American Flag Fund, wish you all a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, Happy Holidays and a very happy and blessed New Year.

Thank you and God bless the United States of America.
