Stonington reminds veterans of approaching deadlines for tax exemptions

STONINGTON — Tax exemptions for veterans and active duty military personnel are available and the filing deadlines are approaching quickly, the town Assessment Department said Wednesday. Sept. 30 is the last day to file for an exemption related to the October 2018 Grand List. A veteran must have served 90 or more cumulative days during wartime except if the war lasted less than 90 days. Veterans should file their honorable discharge (DD214), or letters from their officers if they are on active duty, with the Town Clerk’s office.

Active duty residents are entitled to an exemption of one motor vehicle in addition to the veteran’s exemption. Disabled veterans who have established their eligibility are generally no longer required to file an annual statement from the VA. Also, a married veteran with income of $43,000 or less or a single veteran with income of $35,300 or less may apply for an additional exemption up to and including Oct. 1. For more information call the department at 860-535-5098.
