Special Olympics regatta to sail in Stonington

STONINGTON — The Special Olympics Sailing Regatta will be held at the Wadawanuck Club Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by Special Olympics Connecticut. 

Four sailing teams from around the state include 74 athletes from Stonington, Groton, Saybrook, Darien, Branford and Guilford. 

The event features crews in races on Ideal 18, Sonar, and 420 sailboats. Since June, the Groton/Stonington team has been participating in weekly practice sessions in Stonington Harbor. 

Activities on Saturday include a parade of athletes in Stonington Borough at 10 a.m., with races starting at 11:30 a.m. followed by a dinner dance from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Stonington Borough Fire House. On Sunday, racing will commence at 9 a.m. followed by an awards ceremony on 1 p.m. 

The sailing regatta is part of the statewide Unified Sports® Fall Festival, which also includes golf, croquet, bocce and softball.
