Rhode Island cancels General Assembly session for Thursday as winter storm approaches

PROVIDENCE — The state’s elected officials will not be in session Thursday, a precautionary measure as potentially severe winter weather threatens the state.

The scheduled sessions for the Senate and House of Representatives have both been canceled for Thursday, officials said. As a result, a scheduled hearing before the Senate Finance Committee regarding legislation to provide public support for a new stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox will also be postponed and will instead be heard Tuesday, Jan. 9, at 4:30 p.m. at the Rhode Island State House.

Both chambers are still expected to meet this evening.
