Holiday travel forecast not impacting gas prices; gallon of regular down 4 cents

PROVIDENCE — There’s a lot of planning that goes into holiday travel, but Rhode Island residents won’t have to worry about spending more than expected at the pump this year.

With just one week remaining until Christmas Day, gas prices in Rhode Island were down Monday by an average of four cents over the previous week, according to AAA Northeast. The reduction marks the third straight week of decline and despite holiday travel, additional reduction is gas prices is still anticipated.

“More than 97 million Americans will be driving to this year’s holiday destinations, so lower prices here in the northeast are a timely gift,” said Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast. “Increased gasoline supplies, coupled with weaker winter demand, have helped pushed prices lower.”

The reduction comes just one week after AAA forecast that prices would continue to drop through the holidays, due in part to delayed restarts following Hurricane Harvey and increased supply that is expected to continue through much of the winter.

“Nationally, gas prices are 10 cents cheaper on the month and will continue to drop as we count down the days to the holidays,” Albert said. “AAA expects gasoline demand to weaken throughout the winter, which translates to better prices at the pump.”

AAA Northeast’s Dec. 18 survey of prices in Rhode Island found self-serve, regular unleaded averaging $2.52 per gallon. Rhode Island’s price is nine cents above the national average of $2.43. A year ago at this time, the average price in Rhode Island was 28 cents lower at $2.24 per gallon.

The range in prices in the latest AAA survey for unleaded regular is 31 cents, from a low of $2.39 to a high of $2.70.
