RIGHT NOW I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF Organizing my house — closets, spare rooms, etc.
BORN, RAISED & GREW UP IN The Stonington side of Mystic.
FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY TIME Reading a good book, preferably at the beach.
PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT Being a mom, becoming a teacher and publishing my children’s books.
WHAT I’D LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR Having a positive effect on the lives of children through my parenting, teaching and writing.
ON MY BUCKET LIST Being on a game show.
ALWAYS IN MY POCKET Actually in my purse — a hair clip or elastic, for obvious reasons.
WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP A writer, a teacher and a businesswoman — in that order. I’ve actually done all three of these in the reverse order.
PEOPLE WHO HAVE INFLUENCED ME THE MOST My parents are my biggest heroes. They came from two very different backgrounds, bringing the best of both worlds together to create a family that I will be forever proud to call mine.
FAVORITE AUTHOR I love to read, and will read almost any author or book. Authors who have resonated with me more than once are Kristin Hannah, Jodi Picoult, Jan Karon, Khaled Hosseini, Patricia MacLachlan and Dr. Suess.
LAST BOOK READ “The Lace Reader,” by Brunonia Barry ... because I met her at a book signing and was intrigued by her story behind the story. I love to listen to other writers talk about their writing process.
FAVORITE SONG “American Pie,” by Don McLean.
FAVORITE MOVIE “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
FAVORITE TV SHOW “The Big Bang Theory.”
FAVORITE PET I’ve loved all of our dogs, but I’d have to say Sheba and I connected the most. Losing her last year was very painful, but Lily has brought new life to our household.
FAVORITE MEAL Anything that I don’t have to cook myself. Preferably grilled fish with roasted vegetables.
AMOUNT OF TIME I SPEND A DAY ON FACEBOOK 15 to 30 minutes.
TRAIT I MOST ADMIRE Self-confidence and determination.
PET PEEVE Mispronounced words and misspelled homophones.
FAVORITE QUOTATION “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD The sense of community here is awesome — a place where “everybody knows your name.” Most people seem to stay in the area, so you’re likely to see old friends and acquaintances regularly. I’ve taught children of former classmates, which has been wonderful.
CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT My family.
LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME While I love the summer, the beach and being near the water, I hate to swim.
BEST ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it.
ADVICE I BEST LIKE TO GIVE You never know what you’re capable of until you try, so if there’s something you want to do, go for it!
IF I RULED THE WORLD I WOULD Eliminate poverty and ensure that all people have a place to call home. Of course, this would certainly be possible in the fictional world where I could be crowned ruler.
IF I WON THE LOTTERY, THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS Pay off my mortgage and college tuitions for my kids, then buy my dream car!
I DRIVE A Red 2013 Hyundai Sonata.
I WISH I DROVE A Red Corvette — any year, any style.
ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE Tupperware containers with questionable contents.
IF I COULD HAVE DINNER AND A CONVERSATION WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD I WOULD CHOOSE It would be quite the large dinner party. Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Ghandi, Princess Diana — people like these who have been champions of human rights, and who have made it their life’s mission to lift up the oppressed. The extent of their courage and compassion astounds me.
