Lt. Gina Bertinette Capalbo, daughter of Thomas and Bertinette Capalbo of Westerly, graduated from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy on May 18. Capalbo, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience from Bates College, has begun her residency training in psychiatry at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. During medical school, Capalbo was accepted into Sigma Sigma Phi, an honorary fraternity that emphasizes commitment to community service and academic achievement.
Melanie DeSantis, daughter of Giuseppe and Susan DeSantis of Westerly and Gail and Stan Dezjot of Barrington, graduated cum laude from Boston University, where she earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in international relations and history. DeSantis participated in coursework offered by the university’s Center for Cross Cultural Learning, studying abroad in Morocco and taking an extensive Arabic language course. In addition to specializing in the Middle East and studying Arabic, she recently became a certified teacher of English as a second or foreign language.
Nicholas Terranova, son of Dennis and Rose Terranova of Pawcatuck, graduated magna cum laude from Mitchell College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration-accounting. Terranova will pursue a master’s degree at Southern New Hampshire University.
Rochelle Devault, daughter of David and Lorraine Devault of Westerly, graduated with a Master of Arts degree in teaching in secondary science education from Brown University, awarded during Brown’s 245th commencement ceremony on May 26. Devault is a 2010 graduate of Northeastern University, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She has been hired as a science teacher at Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich.
David Patten of Westerly has been named vice president for business affairs at the Community College of Rhode Island.
Local students joining the University of Delaware include Eric Brown of Mystic and John Skogerboe and Connor Schrempf of Pawcatuck. They participated in the university’s new student orientation this summer.
Mark Crawford of Mystic, Warren Lorenz of Stonington, and Sarah Williams of Pawcatuck were among the 176 graduates of the Class of 2013 at the Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor, Conn. The commencement speaker was the New York Times columnist Frank Bruni, a member of the class of 1982. Crawford was a school prefect, resident assistant, and class agent. He received the Junior Theater and the Morris H. Brown Senior Theater Arts prizes. He starred in several plays, and performed in the spring dance and musical revues and the spring one-act festival. He also stage-managed other presentations and performed as a soloist in the senior voice recital. Crawford received senior mathematics and science honors and contributed to the school newspaper, The Log. Lorenz was a recipient of science honors, president of his junior and senior classes, and an actor in the one-act festival. He was a member of the boys varsity hockey and golf teams. Williams was a National Merit Commended Student and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society and the National Independent School Honor Society. She also received history and science honors, and was a peer counselor and a vice president of the Pelican Service Organization. She was photo editor of the yearbook, The Confluence, a contributor to The Log, a member of the Model United Nations, and played clarinet in the concert band.
Joann Cowley of North Stonington, was named to the dean’s list at Fairfield University for the spring semester.
Catherine Orszulak from The Prout School and Rachel Laudone from Westerly High School were among 25 seniors who were awarded $1,000 scholarships from the Rhode Island Polonia Scholarship Foundation for the 2013-14 academic year.
