NEWPORT — Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan has sold her Newport estate, Casa del Sole, for $3,999,000. Kwan took sole ownership after filing for divorce from Clay Pell last year. Kwan and Pell both listed “irreconcilable differences” in divorce papers, The Providence Journal reported.
The nearly 2-acre estate at 63 Hammersmith Road, built in 1900, was initially listed for $4,395,000. The 4,956-square-foot home includes four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms. Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty announced the sale of the Palladian-style villa.
The property is assessed for $3.1 million. Pell acquired the property in December 2014 for $1.5 million, and it was transferred at no cost to Kwan last July.
Kwan is a five-time world figure skating champion, winning Olympic medals in 1998 and 2002. Pell is a grandson of Rhode Island’s late Democratic U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell, and he unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2014. The two married in Providence in 2013.
