STONINGTON — A Westerly man, Everett J. Beltran, 23, of 199 Main St., Apt. D, was charged with DUI and a weapons offense after the police said he pulled out a hatchet during an argument with another motorist and then struggled with police as they were trying to arrest him.

The incident began at about 12:30 a.m. Friday, when Beltran, traveling eastbound on West Broad Street, swerved over the center lines and sideswiped another vehicle traveling west, the police said. As Beltran continued east, the other driver turned around and followed him, and Beltran pulled into the parking lot of Evans Mobil at 87 West Broad St., according to a police report.

The two drivers got out of their cars and argued at the gas station, the police said, and during the argument Beltran removed a hatchet from the trunk of his car, according to the second driver and another witness. He held the hatchet in his hands but put it back in the trunk of his car when the police arrived, the witnesses told the police.

When speaking with Beltran, officers said they noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and that his eyes were bloodshot and glossy, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. Beltran also yelled continuously and used profanities when speaking with police, the report said.

After police placed him under arrest, Beltran refused to get into the cruiser and officers struggled with him for several minutes to put him in the vehicle, the police report said.

He was charged with DUI and with having a weapon in a motor vehicle, failure to drive to the right, driving with a suspended license in an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, breach of peace, threatening, interfering with a police officer, and possession of less than a half ounce of marijuana. The police said he was also found to have an outstanding arrest warrant.

Beltran was brought to the police station and later taken to New London Superior Court for arraignment.
