The Rhode Island Dairy Farms Cooperative, which markets products under the Rhody Fresh brand, earned a bronze award at the Big E agricultural fair for its latest cheese, Rhode Island Heritage Breed Ayrshire. Milk from Ayrshire cows at Cottrell Homestead in West Kingston is used to make the cheese. To be designated as a heritage breed by the Livestock Conservancy, a cattle breed must be registered as a true pedigree descendant from early Colonial America. The Big E (Eastern States Exposition) in West Springfield, Mass., is the largest agriculture event on the Eastern Seaboard, and all six New England states are represented at the fair. Rhody Fresh Heritage Breed Ayrshire Cheese is available at the Cottrell’s Farm Stand in West Kingston; Rippy’s Marketplace in Charlestown, and other locations in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
