It has come to my attention, by Ken Burton, “Mr. Flag Committee,” that a number of flags turned up missing during the display assembled on the streets of Westerly and Pawcatuck over the 4th of July holiday weekend. I was personally affected by this information as I worked along with Ken in establishing the Flag Committee. We personally waited an appropriate interval of time before reporting this to allow for some honest citizens to come forward with the flags, assuming that they were found, misplaced or removed due to the bad weather during that holiday weekend. Were the flags to be returned, no questions would be asked! Just drop them off at the Westerly Armory. If the perpetrators of these deeds are reading this article, I wish you to take a moment and reflect what this flag stands for. Many over the period of American history have given their all for this. Patriots have put their lives on the line with all of their worldly goods. What are you thinking now when you speak the oath, “I pledge allegiance to the United States and to the flag for which it stands.”This is your flag…think about it…five flags are missing. John HowardWesterly Editor’s note: All of the missing flags are “dedicated flags,” meaning each was purchased in memory of a loved one and carries a tag indicating such. Not all of the flags placed downtown by the Westerly Flag Committee are dedicated flags.
