WESTERLY — Westerly High’s girls’ basketball team will host Chariho High on Tuesday for a Division I first-round playoff game at 7 p.m.It’s the first time the two rivals have met in the postseason since 2010 when the Bulldogs edged the underdog Chargers 46-43 in a memorable Division II championship game at the Ryan Center. A big crowd went to the URI campus to witness the game.Westerly had defeated Chariho three times earlier in the season and twice handily — 56-38 in the first round of the WCCU Holiday Tournament, and 53-49 and 52-33 in regular-season league games.Chariho will be an underdog again Friday.Westerly turned back Chariho in both regular-season Division I-South games — 41-36 at home on Jan. 27 and 44-37 on March 1 at Chariho.The Bulldogs, who finished 9-9 in league play, are seeded seventh. Chariho, which went 7-11 in league games, is seeded 10th. There are three five-team leagues in Division I. The top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs regardless of league. The top four teams get a bye into the quarterfinals.Bay View (18-0), North Kingstown (16-2), Barrington (15-3) and La Salle (15-3) and are the top four seeds. Barrington is the three seed by virtue of its 53-41 win against La Salle on Dec. 19.South Kingstown (14-4), Portsmouth (10-8), Westerly (9-9) and Smithfield (9-9) are seeded fifth through eighth. A 50-34 win on Jan. 17 put Westerly a notch higher than Smithfield.Cranston West (8-10), Chariho (7-11), Ponaganset (5-13) and Cumberland (4-14) round out the field.The Westerly-Chariho winner will play a quarterfinal game against North Kingstown on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Rhode Island College.Westerly has an overall record of 11-12, while Chariho comes into the postseason at 9-13 overall.
