PROVIDENCE (AP) — Schools across Rhode Island are closed and nearly two dozen flights at T.F. Green Airport are canceled as a winter storm hit the region today with snow and sleet.The National Weather Service expects today’s storm to dump 5 to 9 inches of snow and sleet in the northwestern corner of the state, 3 to 7 inches in the Providence area and 1 to 3 inches along the coast. A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. In Connecticut, 6 to 10 inches of snow and sleet is expected, with 5 to 9 inches in the Hartford area and 1 to 3 inches along the shoreline.The storm has created difficult driving conditions. The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is telling bus riders to expect delays.Connecticut officials delayed the start of the legislature’s annual session from today to Thursday and ordered a delayed opening for state offices to 10 a.m. for nonessential state workers.Most schools in the Rhode Island are closed and parking bans are in effect in several communities.The R.I. governor’s office says state offices will remain open.T.F. Green reports 22 canceled flights. Bradley International Airport north of Hartford is reporting more than three-dozen canceled flights.Metro-North has canceled and combined some trains on the New Haven Line.
