WESTERLY — Jim Bitgood dethroned 2012 champion Jim Chiaradio and earned his first Senior club championship at Winnapaug Golf Course on June 23. The scoring for the championship was a point per hole and Bitgood won 2 and 1 over Chiaradio. “It was even going into the 14th hole,” Bitgood said. “I won the 14th and then birdied the 15th to take a two-hole lead.” “We tied on the 16th then I hit a shot from 180 yards out over the trees and landed 12 feet from the hole. He (Chiaradio) bogeyed the hole so I just needed to three-putt to win.” Bitgood said he had a mix of emotions after he won. “It felt great to win, but also I was relieved) because I should have been up three early on but I missed a couple of putts.” A graduate of Westerly High School in 1974, Bitgood played on the Westerly High golf team and has won other club tournaments. “I won a club championship at Pond View, back when it was Pond View (about 30 years ago). I also won the Four-Ball Championship with my partner (Bob Dagastino) in 2008, 2009 and 2011.” En route to the final, he also beat Chuck Falcone and Joe Woycik. Also Lou Toscano beat Steve Gardnet 3 and 2 in the first flight, Ed Bruno defeated Bill Fountain 3 and 2 in the second flight, Jim Celico won on the 19th hole over Chris Jurgasik in the third flight and Don Delaney won 3 and 2 in the fourth flight over Larry DeSantos.
